Leah – Kisumu
Leah* is a single mother of three. When we met her in 2017 she was in her early twenties and was struggling with three young children after the violent murder of her husband.
She was facing many challenges and unable to meet her basic needs. Struggling to keep her family alive and experiencing difficulties with other members of the community Leah says she “was losing hope in life”.
Leah lives in ‘Absolute poverty’ which is defined as a severe deprivation of basic human needs (e.g. food, water and shelter). In Kisumu County, where Leah lives, 60% of people live in Absolute poverty (almost three times the Kenyan average). That’s over half a million people. Behind each one of these people is a story waiting to be heard.
For Leah help arrived just in time. Our team have been walking alongside Leah for three years now. In this time they have helped her in practical aspects of life like food and savings as well as training her in business skills and teaching her more about Jesus.
“All of us want to see the best come out of people like Leah” – Rose, Every Life Kenya team leader
Although there is still a way to go before this small family can support themselves in all their needs we have seen such a change in Leah. She now looks forward to the future and hopes to become a hairdresser through the business and life skills she has learnt as part of our weekly Life Group.
Rose noticed that Leah has potential to be a great leader so she is now the group secretary of our Life Group, supporting the other women in the group. She also works hard to ensure that any official information reaches all the members. This has been particularly important over the last few weeks with ensuring the distribution of essential Covid-19 information to women who might not otherwise hear this news.
“I want to thank Almighty God for how far he has brought me, and also Every Life for the Life Group. I have realised that I can achieve my goals that I had given up on and I have grown spiritually as well. May God bless the Every Life team for showing me love, and our entire village.” Leah*
